ARTivism = ART + ACTIVISM
Street Wise ARTivism mural festival took place September 7th -13th 2020 (with a little break for a snow storm). The festival gave artists a chance to create murals highlighting important issues in our society and to encourage the community to come together and create change. This year, WORKSHOP8 was included in the mix of 38 talented artists.
WORKSHOP8 was selected to create a mural about something we are passionate about. Any idea what we chose? That’s right, affordable housing.
“HOUSING FOR ALL“
Maris (who just relocated to Virginia, partially because of housing costs in Colorado) made a recording to explain why we chose to paint “Housing For All” and why there needs to be change in the affordable housing market.
Our mural is located on the North facade of the former Liquor Mart at 1750 15th Street (soon to be 150 residential units).
Painting on brick wasn’t easy, but it allowed for some cool textures.

“Rise Up”
The mural to our left is by Jessica Moon Bernstein, and was surprisingly fitting for the weather events that happened during the festival. Along the Front Range the temperature went from a 100 degree day on Saturday 9/5, to snowing on Tuesday 9/8. Jessica’s mural calls for action on climate justice. Jessica says about her work, “I created this mural to bring awareness to the impacts of climate change that will not be borne equally or fairly, between rich and poor, women and men, and older and younger generations but also to climate justice, which looks at the climate crisis through a human rights lens and on the belief that by working together we can create a better future for present and future generations.”

“My Future, My Education”
The mural created by Jwlç Mendoza stands out with his powerful messages and symbolism wrapped into one concept – LGBTQ rights, racial justice, climates change, and mainly families without borders and immigration in the United States. He shows a child sporting a Tlaloc mask and a background of colorful geometric shapes to show Mexican and Native American culture.
