In the last 12 months WORKSHOP8 has:

received awards and recognition

Paisano Green Community just kept winning awards, including an honorable mention for the Jewel Box, a NAHRO National Award of Merit, and an AIA Colorado North Merit Award.

CROSS\TOWN station received 2nd place in the MFA affordable housing design competition.

W8 continued to receive great press coverage in publications and websites, such as Texas Architect, GreenSource, Builder and Developer Magazine, edcmag.com, architizer.com, Boulder County Business Report, GreenBuildTV.com, green building & design magazine, and the Denver Post.

worked on really cool multifamily projects

W8 was fortunate to have been awarded back-to-back projects for the Denver Housing Authority. The South Lowell Apartment Rehab and Redevelopment was completed in 2013 and we began design work on Mariposa Phase VI last year, which will break ground this summer.

showed off some beautiful homes

W8’s residential team loves working closely with homeowners and helping them teach an old ranch new tricks, transform something dated into something modern, design a super sustainable dream home, or create a tiny retreat for guests.

performed pro bono and community services

W8 started two pro bono projects in 2013. We donated the design for the new offices of Boulder B Cycle (look for a blog post on this when we get photographs) and are collaborating with the City of Boulder to update the Boulder International Peace Garden. Joseph was part of a student team who designed the Peace Garden over 24 years ago. The rededication is planned for 2015.

W8 continues to be involved with the design and affordable housing community through board and committee participation in the AIA Colorado North Chapter and Housing Colorado.

added awesome people to the W8 team

W8 is pleased to have added some great team members in the last twelve months. Nathan Stark’s mastery of ArchiCAD and project management skills has made our office so much more efficient! Emily Axtman brings heart to her design and is a real team player. Ugljesa Janjic and Ann Marie Jackson will head up W8’s K-12 design department.

formalized our mentor and internship program

In April we announced W8’s mentor program and mentored four high school students, including Elle Withaar from the Rocky Mountain School of Expeditionary Learning.

Working with the ENVD school at CU Boulder, W8 is currently mentoring three aspiring architects: Graham Bowman, Gaby Crespo, and Alex Chavez.

Ulla also served a second year as program coordinator for the Finland Young Ambassadors’ Program.

visited beautiful places

Ulla Lange, a native of Finland, travelled to Finland and back, and Finland and back, and then back to Finland again for an extended stay. Here are images from the Annual Housing Fair in Tampere.

Joseph Vigil (AIA Colorado North 2012 Architect of the Year) and I took the trip of a life time when we traveled to Japan for three weeks, courtesy of a travel scholarship Joseph won in 2012. Some of our favorite things there included the flowers, manhole covers, and bathrooms.

partied like Finns at Molkky Fest 2013

We plan to make the Molkky Fest an annual event. . . even if Ulla does stay permanently in Finland.

survived the 1000 year rain event

VD-2014_1000-year-rain

What can be said about the 1000 year rain event that hasn’t already been said. The damage to personal property and loss of life is a real tragedy for the state. We tried to help in little ways, as well as on projects with a larger impact.

Small things included, donating to the United Way, Community Foundation, and Cyclist for Jamestown. Encourating you to make additional donations by offering to send you a free wax painting. (I only got a couple of takers, but I have more paintings, so if you’d like to make a donation to a flood related charity, I’ll still honor my original offer.) And participating the Boulder Creek clean up.

In terms of larger impact projects, W8 is providing a post-flood assessment of the Flatirons Event Center for the City of Boulder. We are also looking forward collaborating with the Boulder County Housing Authority and Milender White Construction to build the Town of Lyons new affordable housing.
